With a design that is nothing short of revolutionary, Air-Chair, designed by Jasper Morrison in 1999, was the first single-piece chair in the world conceived and designed to be produced with air-moulding technology. The material used, a polypropylene reinforced with glass fibre, results in a lightweight yet ultra-resistant chair. Air-Chair and Air-Armchair are appearing at the 2023 Salone in a new version made entirely from 100% post-consumer plastic, obtained from the recycling of polylaminates and single-use food packaging. Highlighting the design’s sustainable mission, the two models are presented in a single finish resulting from the mix of materials, without the addition of dyes during production. Air-Chair is not just any plastic chair: it has been defined by many as “a chair of today, a classic of tomorrow”. This is emphasised by Eric Kentley of the London Design Museum, who described Air-Chair as “an absolute masterpiece. It’s extraordinary. Aesthetically pleasing and affordable, it can be placed indoors or out. This chair combines two fundamental characteristics of good design: simplicity and timeless style”. “The hollow core achieved through the use of special air-moulding technology makes Air-Chair the epitome of Jasper Morrison’s characteristic minimal design” adds Murray Moss, owner of Moss Store in New York. “Like a soufflé, Air-Chair is more skin than bone, it is the outline of a chair, truly delicious”. Balanced, dynamic, stackable and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, Air-Chair is the innovation which creates atmosphere: in the home or outdoors, in public or in private.
