When a house is limited in space, simplicity and practicality certainly are two mainstays. This is when modern models of mini-staircases are a good option. These stairs are narrower than the classic ramp stairs, with a peculiar profile of the stairs that are carved in the half part where the foot does not land. The outcome is that of a flight of steps where to go up and down always with the right foot. It might look like an uncomfortable and cramped solution, nonetheless it is rather immediate to learn how to properly use them. Especially, it is a rather smart choice since in spite of the stairs occupying a rather modest space (the model is also known as space-saving stair) it does not sacrifice on its function as an architectural element of great aesthetic impact.
The structure of a mini-staircases is a rather simple one. As a matter of fact, this is normally a stair that comes in a kit made of prefabricated modules that need to simply be assembled with no great efforts. Generally speaking, the core of the mini-staircase is a steel structure on which the steps are hooked so that they are fixed steadily without the aid of the lateral supports that are typical of a ramp staircase. Such a peculiar structure with the central support that runs underneath the steps Is comfortable, since, when necessary, it also allows to adjust the mini-staircase orientation, even arching it if needed. From an aesthetic perspective, mini-staircases are really nice-looking, since usually the steel bearing structure is associated with wooden steps, to be left natural or painted, in a way to integrate with the rest of the house. Essential but complete, each of their components is carefully studied: little encumbrance and maximum freedom of movement are the underlying concepts, with a design always in step with the times.
Whether we are looking at wooden mini-stairs or models in metal, slightly spiral or vertical, with a square or rounded, helical or alternating plan, these structures represent the ideal solution for small spaces. A good project idea, the choice of the right materials and especially handcraft expertise can make mini-stairs fully fledged functional furnishing elements. Versatile, lightweight and at times very compact, mini-stairs are also modular and apt to be re-adapted in time. Today the array available is extraordinarily large, with an offer of models that differ not only by their shape and material, but also by style. Before making a final choice, it is better to evaluate some factors. One of the main ones is the height difference to be bridged. If low, a continuous ramp can be chosen, otherwise a corner model or one with an intermediate landing is more suitable. Other decisive elements are the floor surface that will be covered by the structure, its weight and the one it will bear and its positioning within a space (if centered in a room, in the corner or against the wall). The strength point of mini-stairs is also the combination of the two materials that are more largely used for the traditional making of staircases (wood and metal), in an interplay of volumes and surfaces, textures and chromatic neutrality that emphasizes the minimalism and formal cleanness of such a complement. All without turning down on on simplicity and functionality.
A main characteristic of a mini-staircase is that it is fixed and therefore different from a retractable stair, that it has steps (and therefore is different from a ladder). Normally such type of staircase is not created in the construction phase, in which case, probably, other options would more likely be adopted, but is installed at a later stage exactly in order to respond to a specific need. Thanks to the latest rules in force concerning renovation works, it is now possible to create a small living space also in the attic of a building. This has made it necessary to foesee a connection between the two levels and especially an easily accessible one. If the attic is large enough to store objects that would otherwise clutter the house, it is obviously somehow already accessible by means of a trapdoor and a retractable ladder. When the attic becomes habitable, however, the need to access it becomes much more frequent and a retractable ladder could be handier. If the space for a normal masonry staircase is not enough, there is no choice but to use a mini-staircase, which, besides taking up little space in width, occupies very little space in length too. The mini-staircases main characteristic is in fact a much greater slope than in a normal staircase, but at the same time smaller than what you find in a ladder.
