Pascal, with Sonora and Atollo, represents a perfect embodiment of Vico Magistretti’s design aesthetics. Extremely pure geometric shapes are composed to create functional and symbolic assembly compositions. In Pascal, for example, the popular theme of the cone is enhanced by repetition, but, as I said, there is not just a formal reason, but also a practical one: the upper cone holds a halogen bulb and acts as the “luminator”, while the lower one holds two incandescent bulbs and transforms the sloping walls above into perfect reflectors, thus giving rise to ambient light directed downwards. That is how the genius of the design transforms a floor lamp with upward emission, through duplication, into a reading lamp, all without any apparent effort, preserving the absoluteness of the construction. In parallel, the precise, poetic simplicity preserves Pascal from all forms of ageing, protecting it from trend-related phenomena and ensuring that even today, after almost 30 years, it is still a contemporary object.
The lamp, initially floor-standing or hanging, was characterised by two painted aluminium cones with a diameter of 34 and 42 cm facing upwards (floor-standing) or downwards (hanging).
The hanging model (430), which left production quickly, used a black electric cable and the upper cone (with the smaller diameter) housed two 40 W mirrored glazed bulbs with an E14 fitting while the lower cone (with the larger diameter) housed a 100 W Globolux bulb with an E27 fitting. The total height was 50 cm, not including the cable. It was manufactured in sand or white finishes.
The floor-standing model reached 200 cm and had a base initially made from a painted metal plate, which created a significant staff bead with the cable exiting from the bottom (40 cm diameter). In 1992, a base was used which, while still circular and highly radial, was made using “Pietra Serena” stone (35 cm diameter, 2 cm thickness) with the cable exiting from the bottom thanks to a suitable sub-base. This version is still in production today.
The floor-standing model, which has always had two independent power switches and a black cable and switch, had different codes depending on the type of lighting chosen. The 340 model had two clear 100 W bulbs in the lower cone with an E27 fitting and 1 clear 150 W bulb with an E27 fitting in the upper cone. Conversely, the 345 model had a 300 W halogen tube in the upper cone.
