Technically overhead showers are the final part of shower columns, in other words the part from where water is supplied. In the case of traditional shower columns with wallbars, overheads generally are of a limited size, whereas in the case of in-wall columns or in shower panels, the overhead can take larger dimensions.
Overhead showers join together functionality and the aesthetics. In order to chose the overhead shower that best fits your shower box or cabin, you need to start by carefully analyzing the available space and the furniture style of your bathroom. Depending on the type of installation there are wall-mounted overhead showers or ceiling-mounted overhead showers, installed and connected to the column through an arm or built-it, the latter solution being considerably more elegant and minimalist.
Compared with ordinary taps, the main function of overhead showers is to emit a more conspicuous and more uniform water jet on the body. For a more relaxing and custom-made shower experience it is possible to change the water jet based on personal tastes or of the needs of the moment; you can have rain showers, thus gentle and even, waterfall showers, more vigorous and precise, or even softened showers with the addition of air particles in the case of mist spray overhead showers.
The best models are equipped with anti-limescale systems thanks to the silicone nozzles on the tip; they make the removal of limescale deposits easier and some of them can also be fully pulled out to be more easily cleaned up. Many models feature flow reducers in order to avoid wastes and excessive water consumption. Overhead showers vary also by their shape. There are round, rectangular and square overhead showers so to fit the bathroom style at the best and adjust to the shower cabin dimensions. As far as materials are concerned, the most used is surely stainless steel, a material that stays unaltered in contact with water, but also PVC, which is very resistant to temperature leaps and that is basically immune to humidity. The market also offers brass and aluminum overhead showers, with diverse finishes, from polished to brushed; glass models are highly fine and elegant, ideal for chromotherapy since colors variation is better cast thanks to the glass transparency.
Wall-mounted overhead showers with arm are perhaps the most popular model. Installation is not that complicated, although there are some precautions to be taken into account. The arm needs to be long enough to place the overhead shower at the center of the shower cabin, thus it needs to be chosen in accordance with the room available. To enhance enjoyment, it is advisable to opt for models featuring a pivot joint in the final part of the arm that connects to the overhead shower; this allows a slight rotation to point the water jet as desired.
In some models the arm and the overhead shower come in one piece, a kind of plate, with a non-adjustable, fixed water spray. They are not adequate for large showers, but can make a valid alternative and an aesthetically very pretty one in tinier showers. An evolution of this models are wall-mounted built-in overhead showers, not too appropriate for large-size showers either. They are not so common to find, exactly because they do not leave much flexibility, being mounted inside the wall; their waterfall jet is anyhow very delightful. The same rule applies to ceiling-mounted overhead showers, always to be installed with an arm; it is always recommended to opt for models with an adjustable angle, which are in fact the most diffused, to aim the water jet as it is wished. In this case it is important to mind that the arm length be chosen in proportion with the shower cabin height so to allow even the tallest member of the family to shower comfortably – it is recommended to place it at least 20 cm over the head and at a 210 cm height from the shower tray. The finest aesthetic solution are however ceiling-mounted, built-in overhead showers. Neat and minimalist, ideal for a bathroom with a contemporary design, it is also to be preferred for function reasons since it offers greater freedom of movement besides limiting the surfaced to be cleaned up.
Ceiling-mounted, built-in overhead showers are the most popular and are probably the ones that first come to our minds when thinking of overhead showers. They are of a fine and elegant aesthetic and give shower cabins a linear and clean appearance, along the lines of contemporary trends in the world of bathroom furnishing.
They are widespread in spa and wellness centers, often associated with accessories that complete the wellness experience. This is the case of overhead showers with chromotherapy, with integrated lights, or with aromatherapy, where a tiny aerator spreads essential oil according to scheduled cycles not to get the user easily used. For hydromassage, it is only necessary to complete the set with side showers which can be turned on individually depending on the desired effect.
Ceiling-mounted overhead showers are available in different shapes and dimensions -rectangular, square or round; to guarantee a correct aeration their installation require the presence of a false ceiling. Next to allowing to regulate the height, false ceiling also serve as a technical compartment where to store all the necessary plant components.
