Treadmills

Tapis roulant is the French name for a sports equipment that is widely used for fitness. Made of a conveyor belt which it is possible to walk or run on without the body moving forward, treadmills are just like exercise bikes, spin bikes or rollers for cyclists. Nowadays treadmills are available in a large variety of models thought for the home fitness, as well as for professional training in gyms and can be classified on the basis of their built-in technology, functioning, designs and materials. At times, the amount of space available at home can influence the choice of a treadmill, as it is common to think that besides being a costly equipment treadmills are also too massive. However, it is also possible to find on the market modest-size treadmills and others equipped with a folding system, so to allow anyone willing to do a complete, comfortable and safe workout to always achieve excellent results, even in the tiniest space. Furthermore, if you cannot give up to your daily dose of running even at the office, you can opt for the innovative walking pad, an ultra-thin platform where to walk and run almost like on a treadmill but with all the benefits of an extremely handy device.

Treadmills: the models on the market

In general, all models of treadmills are conceived to meet the most diverse weight and size-related requirements. Even the least professional treadmills, those that are normally used at home, are studied with specific criteria to suit specific needs. Before buying such a piece of equipment it is recommended to keep in mind that the running belt needs to have some necessary features and to be able to match the requirements of its user. In general for a runner whose size ranges between 150/170 cm, the speed of the treadmill should reach a maximum of 14-20 km/h and the belt should be at least between 135-145cm long. For people tall between 170/190 cm, speed cannot exceed 22km/h and the running belt should be at least 140/150 cm long. The same can be said for the belt width, considering that the longer the running belt the better will be the perceived stability once on it. The running surface including both the belt and the space in between the side bends, should be wide enough to ensure steadiness even when the belt speed is increased. Another key feature of treadmills and especially of those thought for the home use, is the possibility to fold them. Normally all treadmills are folding, but some models fold more than others. Ultra-compact treadmills or slim treadmills, in particular take up only 28 cm when folded. This allows to store them in the space between the wall and the closet, or even under the bed.

Motor, rolls and electric incline of treadmills

Nowadays the market can rely on a wide offer of treadmills and it is possible to choose among more or less powerful pieces of equipment based on what is looked for. The treadmills designed for the home use are equipped with DC motors, while the treadmills we find in modern gyms are more frequently powered by AC motors. Many modern machines are also equipped with a self-activating ventilation system that cools down the engine, at least partly preventing it from overheating.
A roller track enables the belt to glide properly by means of electric power that enables it to run and incline. The treadmill solidity is also determined by the resistance of the rolls that need to be always efficient and able to perform a smooth and fluid movement.
Contemporary treadmills offer a series of technological functions, able to make every workout safer, enjoyable and efficient. By adjusting the speed and incline it is possible to control the physical effort and adapt it also to what a person can do and the progresses achieved through the training. Nearly every treadmill also features a digital interface allowing to monitor several parameters linked to the workout, such as the distance run, speed, burnt calories and heart frequency.

Electric and magnetic treadmills

Treadmills can be classified under two categories; here are namely electric and magnetic treadmills. The former make use of electric energy to activate the conveyor belt. The second uses the running of the belt as set by its user and the belt speed is determined by two magnets that move away from or closer to one another depending on the command arriving from the user via the control board. This type of product is usually more recommended for those who are looking for an equipment that is better suited to walking or speed walking and often gives no possibility to adjust the incline.
