Roche Bobois: The story of a family business
The company history starts with a rather unlikely meeting. In 1950, Jacques Roche purchased the old Alexandre Dumas theater and opened a furniture store. Philippe and François, hi sons, joined the company and soon established a successful development strategy. The main idea was distributing the best contemporary furniture. In their choice they were heavily inspired by Bauhaus designers like Minvielle, Steiner or Airbourne, and by equally renowned designers like Pierre Paulin and Marc Berthier. Around the same time, the Chouchans started selling furniture in Paris on the Boulevard Sébastopol at "Au Beau Bois" (later to become "Bobois"). In 1960, not yet acquainted, Francois and Philippe Roche and Patrick and Jean-Claude Chouchan attended the Copenhagen Salon. The discovery of Scandinavian furniture yielded the idea of importing furniture and to sell it in Paris. Soon after their first meeting they came out with their first catalog and launched a national franchise. Only one year later followed a first advertising campaign in the Elle magazine. Excited by the great success that followed the campaign and by the growing sales figures, it was decided to combine both their resources and their names. Roche Bobois became a brand name and started gaining its own identity.
In the 1970s, television sparked a profound shift in household and the sofa became a "must-have". Sofas were also the core of the well-known Les Contemporains collection. In the 1980's, Roche Bobois expanded its catalogue with Les Provinciales, a collection that would feature reinterpretations of traditional French furniture. In the 1990's the company responded to the trend of fusing ethnic influences with yet another creative move and presented the Voyage collection.
With the beginning of the 21st century Roche Bobois intensified its global expansion by opening brand stores in an even growing number of prestigious cities around the world, from the former Lupari palace in Bologna to futuristic salesrooms in Montreal. According to the motto "Design for Living", the company also started numerous successful collaborations with renowed designers and architects. In 2010, the company celebrated 50 years of design and international development, with numerous events and a new partnership with the famous fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier. Today, Roche Bobois design furnishings are available in 50 countries from more than 250 exclusive branch stores.
The collections by Roche Bobois
The Roche Bobois catalogue comprises two different, but complementary concepts: While the Les Contemporains
collection reflects current trends and modern creativity the Les Nouveaux Classiques
collection boldly reinvents traditional furniture and adapts it to today's style. The first collection is the result of close collaborations with renowed and emerging fashion designers, artists and architects and plays with current trends in interior design and blends creativity and functionality, in order to develop smart and modern furniture. The second collection, instead, uses only best-quality woods, the most beautiful leathers and the most original fabrics and is meant to go beyond constraints of time or trends and to be a reflection of the French "art de vivre".
Today Roche Bobois presents a wide range of furnishings for every ambience, from the living room to the bedroom, as well as a distinctive choice of weatherproof outdoor furniture. Roche Bobois furnishings are unique and a high value of brand recognition. Still, the company is able to offer an exceptional variety when it comes to customization. Its customers can choose between a vast selection of options like form, color, leather, finishings and other details that make every piece of furniture become one of a kind.
An increased awareness of how human activities have impact on the environment has moved Roche Bobois to develop a new and more sustainable approach to design and manufacturing. As for Roche Bobois a product is only creatively brilliant if its production respects the environment, the company increased its commitment to ensuring that all its products are more environmentally friendly. This new concept is based on six criteria: sustainability of the materials, nature of the finishes and coatings, average life span of a product, transport costs, recyclability and quantity of different types of material. In addition the company puts much effort into two interconnected factors: reducing CO2 emissions and increasing transportation efficiency.
