Samsung is a South Korean multinational whose origins date to 1938 when the company was engaged in distributing foodstuffs. It wasn't until the 1950s that the Samsung Corporation, with a branch in Tokyo, was founded and later became Samsung-Sanyo Electronics. Samsung means 'three stars' in Korean and stands for something big, powerful and numerous. In fact, Samsung now has subsidiaries in 58 countries and controls numerous affiliated companies in countless sectors. The Samsung Electronics division was confirmed in the 1970s as the world's leading TV manufacturer. Other household appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, ovens and air conditioners were added over time. In the 1980s, Samsung established two R&D institutes to expand its activities in electronics, semiconductors and telecommunications. The company's deep commitment to innovation enabled it to develop some of the world's firsts - like the video-disc recorder (DVD-R), the MP3 mobile phone, the digital television, and the 64 Mega DRAM memory for PCs. With the digital era, Samsung became the undisputed leader in the electronics sector. Today it is one of the top 10 brands in the world.
