At Sellex they are honest design furniture editors. They connect spaces with people through intelligent, creative and functional solutions that last physically and temporarily. They ensure respectful design that responds to the real needs of society and naturally enhances spaces and people's lives, eliminating the superfluous and maintaining the true essence of what works. Versatile furniture that is the fruit of curiosity and innovative capacity, that which is born of new, more global and sensitive outlooks that are capable of finding inspiration in other disciplines, thoughts and experiences. Technical rigour mixed with what is naturally sustainable to take a clear stance to the world: to bring honest design that meets the needs of today, without compromising those of tomorrow.
Sellex, the story
Sellex was founded in 1977 in San Sebastian, and right from the beginning all its efforts were devoted to the promotion of Design Furniture for Equipments.
1977 - The beginnings of Sellex: import Scandinavian furniture
Sellex starts importing Scandinavian products for the national market. With the market experience gained in these first years, they decided to go a step further and start manufacturing the product they were importing in order to be more competitive in the market. With a clear vocation for Scandinavian design, with Spain still far from Europe, Sellex reached a manufacturing agreement under license with the Swedish brand INNOVATOR, whose products, until the end of the 80s, were a must in all home furniture shops dedicated to design in Spain. In addition to manufacturing the INNOVATOR collection under licence, Sellex continues to work as exclusive importers of important Scandinavian brands: FRITZ HANSEN, NELO, INNO, HYLLINGE...
Mid-1980s - Sellex develops furniture for home
In the mid 80's we took a fundamental decision for the development of the company. Sellex began to develop products for the home. This activity replaced manufacturing under licence and marketing, an activity that was limited only to complementary products from the catalogue. Among them, Nocturno, the clothes stand designed by Bernal-Isern in 1986, stands out.
The 1990s - Sellex explored the Contract market
At the beginning of the 1990s, Sellex decided to make a radical change in the company's strategy. Instead of continuing to work for the home furniture market, they decided to focus products on the furniture market for facilities and collectivities (known as the Contract market). As a result of this new strategic orientation, they began to develop products aimed at this market. The first collaboration was with the architect Enric Miralles, with whom they developed, in 1993, the VACANTE Bench. The first large installation they made in the Contract market was the Sports Centre in Huesca (Spain). The success achieved with the VACANTE Bench encouraged the company to continue developing new products with prestigious designers such as Gemma Bernal and Lievore Altherr Molina.
Year 2002 - 2003 - The AERO Bench: a before and an after
In 2002, the launch of the AERO Bench, designed by Lievore Altherr Molina, catapulted the company to the national and international forefront in the sector of designer furniture for public areas. The success of the AERO Bench allowed us to move, in 2003, to new facility in Irún. A modern pavilion that is perfectly adapted to our needs. Sellex tooks advantage of the change of facilities to obtain the ISO 9001-2000 certificate. From this moment on, the development of new products in collaboration with renowned designers is incessant.
Year 2011 - National Design Prize 2011 awarded by the Spanish Government
This great effort in product development has been recognised not only by the market, but also by experts. The awards received in recent years have been innumerable, the most important of them being the National Design Award received in 2011.
Year 2009 – 2020 - Sellex is even more committed to sustainability
As a result of environmental awareness and the involvement of the entire Sellex team, at the end of 2009 the brand obtained the ISO 14001-2004 environmental certification and in 2012 the ISO 14006-2011 (Ecodesign). The commitment to sustainability takes new steps with the launch of the Range 100/100, made up of a selection of products from the general range manufactured with 100% recycled and recyclable materials. They are also extending the guarantee on products to 5 years, incorporating 100% recycled packaging and installing photovoltaic panels with the aim of 30% of the energy consumed being clean.
Year 2023 - Nowadays - Beyond Design
Design furniture has been the focus since Sellex origins. Timeless designs that last beyond fashions and a quality that gives them validity over time. Made with materials that are part of the circular economy and with certifications that endorse them. Because good design is sustainable. This philosophy is the essence of Sellex. It has been part of the company from the beginning but now they are more aware of it. That is why they have added a word to their activity defining it as honest design furniture. To finally sum it up in one name: Beyond Design.
