Tense: simplicity and suspense
27/06/2016 - ‘The devil is in the detail’, according to interior designer Bertram Beerbaum. ‘Every interior detail, however small, must coordinate with the interior and respect the architecture. Door fittings are an example of something that perhaps one wouldn’t expect to take much notice of, but this is a perfect example of getting the detail right: finding harmony with the interior design and with the architecture. In my design work I always search for what is unique in form, materials, and finish. Of course, design is important, but functionality matters perhaps even more. Design should give people pleasure, offer surprises to the senses, and still be of everyday use. It was therefore a wonderful opportunity for me to work alongside Formani and develop a total concept for door, window, and furniture fittings. We launched the collection under the name TENSE: a pure and honest use of materials and processes, a simple look, and a touch of suspense in the finish.’

The collaboration with Bertram Beerbaum is consistent with the philosophy of Formani, a Dutch manufacturer of high-end window and door fittings. Pim Aarts, director of Formani explains, ‘Quality and innovation are the guiding principles within our organization. When you talk about quality, you are talking about the product, finish, and design. Naturally, we look for partners with the same ethos. The designers we collaborate with are totally in tune with this. Their design vision challenges us: door handles in an unusual shape, or attached in a special way, ideas we can really sink our teeth into. Bertram’s design demanded that we take a new look at materials and how we use them. The result is a success! The cylindrical neck forms the basis of the line, onto which the handle is secured in a special way. I am really happy with this collection. It adds real value to our range of products. The style of the TENSE range is rugged, but simultaneously elegant; the materials and colours give them an honest and pure feel. The success of Bertram’s vision was underscored by a ‘special mention’ at the German Design Awards. Design and functionality combined.’
