Eleni Petaloti and
Leonidas Trampoukis, founders of the New York and Athens-based design studio
Objects of Common Interest, create new
cc-tapis rugs - three unconventionally shaped monochrome pieces with a
moiré effect. The designers achieved this special iridescent, wave-like optical effect by reinterpreting wood grain.
The result is
Zig-zag,
Splash and
Quadratic, three rugs that become "snippets of an infinite landscape, moments destined to last, patterns to be discovered up close," as the designers explain.
The starting point for
Objects of Common Interest was the observation of landscapes and natural materials, focusing on their transformation through erosion and decomposition.
Exploring the natural patterns of certain kinds of wood like maple and cherry, the designers recreated the visual illusion of the grain through a
jacquard weaving technique.
Rarely used in the rug world due to its complexity, the technique combines wool and tencel to create patterns that cannot be reproduced with the Tibetan hand-knotting typically used in the brand's products.
The richly detailed pattern changes with the reflection of light, combining craft and experimentation.
